Back in the old days (before the TBF Challenge), our refrigerator was a largely under-utilized kitchen appliance. It was home to tall green bottles of San Pellegrino water and an abundance of carry out boxes. Those white Styrofoam kind, mostly, with a pizza box or two thrown in for good measure. Okay, maybe a gallon of milk too. Then behold, Kimo's Nutrition List and transformation. As the evidence shows, our refrigerator has morphed into a modern appliance filled with tasty fresh produce. Open the doors day or night and you will be greeted by the most colorful of market colors. Lemons, limes, oranges, starfruit, nectarines, tangerines, red grapes and grapefruits - and that's just on one door. The Styrofoam boxes are pretty scarce these days. And the pizza boxes, somewhat sadly, are nowhere to be found. But as my belt notches keep ticking away and as my energy level reaches new heights, I know fresh fruit and other fresh produce have found a new and permanent home. And it looks pretty good in there too. -KevinTeam Pure Detroit
Kevin and I have only had 2 incidents of pizza since the challenge. Both were mandated by our out-of-town NY import pizza-freak friend. He insists on having Buddy's every single Detroit visit and Pizza Papalis at least every other Detroit visit. I begged off both pizza trips- replacing the Buddy's night with "Oh...I'm taking our young guitar player to see Sean Blackman tonight... ( I ended up having 1 slice of Buddy's from Kevin and David's leftovers + 1/2 a slice from the Pizza Papalis night leftovers. ' Got to navigate the challenge. Pizza doesn't really help with points. s. I TEAM PURE DETROIT
It is very hard to go from not liking to eat until after 4:00 p.m. to eating aaalllllllll day long. Breakfast, snack, lunch, snack, dinner, snack, snack... It was much easier to do coffee, coffee, coffee, coffee, scarf, nibble, nibble, sleep. repeat for a decade +. When I feel like I really do not want to put another thing in my mouth, but trust and have agreed to try things TB/KF's way...I turn to nuts. We've been buying packs of raw nuts for salads and for morning greek yogurt toppings. One night I mixed some from every bag: walnuts, sesame seeds, sliced almonds, pumpkin seeds, pecan (my favorite of the pack) plus (7) chocolate chips (leftover from the cousins' sleepover that included choc. chip waffle-making.). I found this is good when I I think I should put something in the tank but don't really want to...eating really slow...knowing this qualifies as good input anyway it is broken down. Now I make a little mix, split it in half and have 2 little snacks for the day. Sometimes sundried cherries are thrown-in and lately I've weaned off the chocolate chips or hide one somewhere in there. [ I just read that 1/3 cup of nuts/seeds are recommended to assist with lowering blood pressure. Good to know.] s. I TEAM PURE DETROIT
Thank-you to our friends who tend local community gardens. Thank-you for offering us healthy, soul-drenched greens and vegetables to get us True Body Fitness Challenge nutrition points. I love the artwork of the city's garden signs- especially this one L.D. Mullen made.

SHE-RA HANDSTAND I know my sisters cut-out photos of what they would like to look like from SHAPE magazine and RUNNERS WORLD to tape to their refrigerators. I thought I would look on Pinterest for a 'fit' 'body' photo to put in the corner on the computer. This was one of the first ones I saw. Made me laugh. As one who wobbles standing on one foot past 18 seconds - this image represents never...never, in my reality. But I pulled the picture anyway and it is in the corner of our computer screen. I plan on thinking about it next time Kimo has me looking in the mirror, trying some kind of 'balance/imbalance' thing - and I see my wide-waist self in the mirror. I will think 1) If she can stand on her hands..."I can definitely stand on my one foot for 30 (or 20) more seconds." 2) "Hey, we both have black outfits!" and (3) "My hair looks like that." s. I enjoy preparations. I enjoy the rush or ripple that comes post-events. The
‘during’ – family events, work events, personal/professional obligations…most
often no matter how good something is, the enjoyment factor is higher for me
before and/or after. But then there was Zumba. I wasn’t particularly looking
forward to it. I just knew 1) I wanted to try at least once, every class-type
TRUE BODY FITNESS/Kimo offers and 2) the week ran away (having an out-of-town
guest / allowing a fun-for-some kiddie sleepover) …pushed us into the backend
of the week needing to get into a class. When I told Kevin I was hurrying to
register online for Friday’s class with Regina, he told me to sign him up too.
He said he’s been wanting to take the class. It made me laugh, but was no
suprise. I found out after we were married that he loves to dance. He’s a
dance-o-maniac if given the chance. Where our little guy came with us to
Spinning class the previous week – a kind mom offered relief, in the form of a
playdate for him this time, thus turning Zumba into a ‘date’ for me and Kevie.
What a blast we had. It’s crazy. ‘During’ the hour session, I was stunned how
enjoyable the ‘during’ was. (Thank-you Regina. I completely understand your
arms now.)

On my notes, where I jot the food and beverage items consumed everyday, ‘Little
Bike’ has been showing up for the last week or so. ‘Little Bike’ is short for
when I jump on one of our bikes and zip up to the ATM or when number 1 son is
whinning because he forgot the pack of gum I told him he could get when we were
grocery shopping or we just ran out of soy-vanilla ‘milk’, the only thing our
house-guest drinks other than bourbon, to go with the
only-thing-he-eats-for-breakfast-LIFE-cereal. It’s been fun. I was just
thinking how to up things exercise-wise going into a new week. The overall
Kimo/TBF little suggestion ‘Try to do things a bit different than usual,
maybe…walk…or bike…somewhere you usually drive’ led to these ‘Little Bike’
actions. Kevin and our Emily, for her foundation (letsrockcf.org), have cycled
from Detroit to Chicago, twice. From D.C. to Pittsburg. They’ve done the White
Pine trail: Grand Rapids to Cadillac…a couple trips from Detroit to Ann Arbor.
With my (1-challenge point) rides four or five blocks this way, then 4 or 5
blocks back, I’m biking on the wholely opposite side of their biking spectrum.
But it’s fun and feels escapist- “Hey, I’ll be right back”…aka ‘You have to
watch the kid.’ We will see if “Little Bike” becomes a regular habit – a little
challenge itself.

I was laughing, as sprinkling chia seeds on yogurt when my sister was visiting.
She said “Oh wait until you sprout them…” What? Our friend Emily came over a
couple weeks ago for dinner. I was telling her about the challenge… about my
first yoga class…as I quickly sprinkled chia seeds, feeling sneaking, on our
salads. She laughed and told me – how a quick pudding can be made with them. On
a facebook feed I saw this share: A ‘Soak & Sprout’ chart
(http://on.fb.me/RaYebn) from ‘Sacred Source Nutrition’. This interested me as
our TRUE BODY CHALLENGE Nutri-list has us trying at least 8 things on the chart.
Have more to read up on and digest.
